Today the kids and I returned to Sunrise on Mount Rainier for some hot summer hiking. The Sunrise area was only half full, I imagine the wildfire smoke and heat was keeping people away, but not us. We left Sunrise up to Sourdough ridge and hiked along to Frozen Lake. After Frozen Lake, we hiked down to Sunrise Camp. In early July, the Sunrise Camp was a massive snow field, but today it was completely melted away. After Sunrise Camp, we hiked to Shadow Lake to rest. From Shadow Lake, we continued along the Wonderland Trail back to Sunrise. This 3.5 miles in 90F heat at 6500-7000 feet elevation was challenging fun and a beautiful visit to the mountain.
