Sunrise Hikes - Mount Rainier - 7/3/17

Today we escaped the rain and clouds of Maple Valley and returned to Mount Rainier National Park where we drove up to over 6400 feet in elevation to the Sunrise Visitors Center. We arrived before 10 am and found the parking lot only 1/3 full. Our first hike took us up to over 6800 feet along the Sourdough Ridge, where we almost made it to Frozen Lake. We returned along Sourdough Ridge, a 2.6 mile morning hike, and back to the truck for lunch. After lunch we hiked down to Shadow Lake and returned by way of the Sunrise Camp back to Sunrise, a 3 mile trek. After a quick ice cream break we hiked about another mile down and back on the Silver Forest Trail. We came expecting snow and beautiful views, and were treated to both. All of these trails are highly recommended, and were a great hike with the kids. Be aware, Sunrise becomes "Disneyland" on the weekends, and is choked with tourists (although no where near as busy as Paradise). Plan accordingly; I will return with the kids during the week and update if mickey mouse only works weekends. Enjoy!

The days started in layers, with air temps just above 55F.

Only one way past the snow, over it. I think Jess is over it too. :)

A look back at the Sunrise Visitor center.
